in Greek mythology there are five rivers that run through Hades. Of these, Styx is often given the most significance, serving as a watershed for Tartarus and the breadth of Hades. Lethe, on the other hand, is the only one not mentioned by Homer. However, it serves perhaps the most significant role: preparing souls for reincarnation. Lethe, as a river and a goddess, is also significant for her relationship with Mnemosyne, goddess of memory; Lethe's water, and the symbols of her worship, play a major role in Mnemosyne's work in the mortal world, helping some forget their difficult past, while helping others remember their true selves. These rivers flow into and through each other.
